Patrick, a senior energy sector transactional counsel, has opened Burgess Energy Advisors to provide experienced counsel and advice to the energy industry at prices reflective of today's economic realities. Practicing all aspects of energy law and in related areas of commercial and corporate law, Patrick has extensive experience in domestic and international oil and gas property acquisitions and dispositions, property exchanges and diverse joint venture transactions. For over 40 years, Patrick has negotiated and drafted a variety of contracts relating to all aspects of the energy industry. Now at Burgess Energy Advisors, he continues to assist clients in all aspects of their transactions, including the establishment of their new corporations, and related financings.
Patrick has extensive experience with midstream transactions of most types, including drafting and negotiating C,O & O Agreements, processing and transportation, crude oil blending agreements, and contracts relating to various energy industry facility and infrastructure projects. He has provided advice relating to complex operational issues and the interpretation of industry agreements including farmout agreements, pooling agreements, operating agreements, royalty agreements, freehold leases and facilities agreements. Patrick has recently served as VP Legal and General Counsel for a private Canadian producer, handling all of its Canadian and US matters, as well as its international businesses, including its ownership of a drillship and drilling concessions in the Philippines and Indonesia.
Patrick's clients have included private and public corporations and former energy trusts, both in Canada and the United States, as well as international mining and E&P corporations, and oilfield service and midstream companies in Canada. Patrick has managed large teams of lawyers for clients and their projects for most of his career. Branching out at Burgess Energy Advisors, he has served as corporate secretary for publicly traded Pulse Seismic Inc., and has been Chair of the Board of Directors of Broadbill Energy Inc., a midstream crude oil blending and logistics corporation, for three years.
His client-focused approach is the result of his belief that he is retained to act on behalf of his clients, and to find innovative approaches to deal impediments. He is experienced in all areas of energy law, including matters of international energy and M&A transactions relating to joint drilling arrangements, joint ventures, geothermal drilling contracts and international asset acquisitions, and related financings.
Building and maintaining positive relationships within the industry is a core belief in Patrick’s practice. He credits his involvement with industry associations as a key component to his success when dealing with energy matters.
